Breast augmentation helps women achieve a more balanced and proportionate body. By increasing breast size, it also gives women a shapelier contour. The procedure, performed by Dr. Rothaus, a plastic surgeon in New York City, involves the placement of saline or silicone breast implants beneath or over the chest muscle to add volume. In most cases, the incision for this procedure is made either around the lower half of the nipple or under the breast crease, which leaves practically no visible scar. Rothaus Plastic Surgery provides breast augmentation to patients in New York, Manhattan, Westchester, and surrounding New York communities.

What is Breast Augmentation?

At our plastic surgery offices in Westchester and New York City, breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures. Augmentation mammoplasty, more commonly known as breast augmentation, is a surgical procedure done to increase breast size and restore shape and symmetry to the breasts. The surgery often utilizes breast implants, which are specially-designed saline or silicone-filled medical implants, that are placed beneath the breast tissue.

What Are Breast Implants?

While saline and silicone breast implants are both popular choices among women today, the type of implants chosen should only be decided after a consultation with Dr. Rothaus reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of each. During surgery, saline implants are filled with saltwater and the amount of saline can be adjusted at that time.

This type of implant can feel slightly firmer than silicone implants. Silicone breast implants are filled with a prearranged amount of cohesive gel and tend to look and feel more natural. Patients who have less breast tissue and lower body weight are better candidates for silicone implants. A new implant to the market, the IDEAL IMPLANT combines many of the advantages of both the traditional saline and silicone implants. The IDEAL IMPLANT is a saline implant that mimics the feel of silicone implants when placed in the breast. In clinical studies, the IDEAL IMPLANT also had a lower rupture, leakage, and capsule rates than the corresponding silicone implants.

The structured Ideal Implant offers a natural feel and beautiful look with only saline inside.

What is the Procedure for Breast Augmentation Like?

Each breast implant offers a varying profile, volume, base width, and degree of projection which must be taken into consideration when choosing the best implant to a patient’s individual breast and chest wall anatomy. Our goal is to choose an implant that will offer a projection that the patient can be happy with while still naturally filling the base width. Implants come in a variety of shapes such as round or tear-shaped and with smooth or textured surfaces. The implant is inserted in one of 3 pockets, under the pectoralis major muscle, under the breast tissue, and above the muscle, or a combination of the two (biplanar or dual). Commonly, the incision is placed within the crease under the breast (inframammary), around the areolar (periareolar), or in the armpit (axillary). They are all placed to minimize any scarring and offer natural-looking results.

Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Candidates should be in overall good health and should not smoke. If the patient has smoked in the past, she needs to have permanently quit smoking at least two months prior to the procedure. Women who are a good fit for breast implants may have:

  • Micromastia – an atrophic or poorly developed breast,
  • Asymmetry or differences in breast size,
  • Tuberous Breasts,
  • Breasts that have become smaller and lost their firmness after having children

In addition to the patient’s current breast size and breast shape, the patient’s overall health, personal and family history of breast disease, results of mammography for patients over 35, and goals for surgery will be discussed during the initial consultation. We will also evaluate and examine the shape of the chest wall and the breasts, the width of the sternum, the looseness of breast skin, the location of the nipple-areolar complex, and how proportional the breasts are to the current body shape. After taking breast and chest wall measurements we can develop a more customized and individual plan by determining an implant size that’s best for each patient.

How Long is the Recovery from Breast Augmentation?

Following a breast augmentation procedure, patients are dressed in a support bra or wrap. While swelling and bruising are expected after surgery, both will start to dissipate after 1-2 weeks depending on the patient. Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to work within 3-5 days and resume regular activities in 2 to 3 weeks.

Can Breast Implants be Removed?

Breast implants are not a permanent device and need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years. In other cases, it is possible for poorly made silicone breast implants to leak, which can lead to serious medical complications and a build-up of scar tissue around the implant. Rothaus Plastic Surgery offers breast implant removal for patients who are not comfortable with their current breast implants or need to have them removed for medical reasons. The procedure for breast implant removal is fairly straightforward; the physician will first place you under anesthesia, then they will make a small incision along the lower fold of your breast before surgically removing the implant. Recovery from breast implant removal varies from patient to patient but typically includes wrapping the surgical wound and wearing a compression garment to minimize swelling. The healing process can last for several weeks during which any pain, swelling, and bruising will gradually diminish.

Real Patient Testimonials

Excellent Experience – When I went into my consult with Dr. Rothaus, I was completely unhappy with the size of my breasts and also with my persistent belly fat (aka the dreaded FLAT TIRE). Thus, I wanted both a breast augmentation and liposuction. I was reluctant to go through with any procedure, however, because I was terrified. Nevertheless, Dr. Rothaus immediately comforted me with his caring demeanor and obviously immense depth of knowledge. I scheduled both procedures for 3 weeks later. Now, 6 months after surgery, I am completely healed, and I must say THE RESULTS ARE FANTASTIC. I have never been happier with the way I look. Dr. Rothaus has called me on his own three times to see if I had any questions and to make sure everything was healing as planned. If I ever need another cosmetic procedure, there is no question in my mind that it will be done by Dr. Rothaus.
