Liposuction is among the most common cosmetic procedures today with a proven track record spanning years. At Rothaus Plastic Surgery in NYC and Westchester, Dr. Kenneth O. Rothaus, a specialist in body contouring and fat removal, performs liposuction using state-of-the-art technology and body contouring techniques.

What is Liposuction?

At our offices in Westchester and New York City, liposuction is one of the most common surgical procedures. Liposuction, also called lipoplasty and commonly known simply as “lipo,” is a surgical procedure that involves the suctioning of excess fat from specific areas of the body that are “resistant” to diet and exercise. Liposuction can be used on the thighs, flanks, hips, abdomen, arms, bra line, inner knees, and the face and neck. Results from liposuction usually remain for years as long as the patient leads an active and healthy lifestyle.

Who is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

The classic “ideal” candidate for liposuction is a patient at or near his/her ideal weight who has isolated areas of fat that cannot be reduced by diet and exercise alone. It is not a solution for weight loss and should not be looked at as a weight-loss method.

Fluctuations in weight can negatively affect results and should be avoided. With this in mind, candidates who intend to get pregnant should put off the procedure until after childbirth.

Good candidates are men or women who:

  • Live a healthy lifestyle and have a reasonable and stable weight
  • Have minimal to no sagging or excess skin and have a healthy skin tone
  • Have pocket of fat deposits that cannot be resolved with diet and exercise alone

Your Liposuction Consultation

During the initial consultation, Dr. Rothaus will evaluate the areas you wish to improve. He will also ask you about your complete medical history, including any existing conditions, allergies, past procedures, and whether you are taking any over-the-counter or prescribed medications.

He will use the information provided in the consultation to tailor an individualized treatment plan that addresses the areas of concern and the amount of fat to be removed.

What is the Procedure for Liposuction?

During surgery, Dr. Rothaus will inject a solution containing tumescent fluid (local anesthetic, epinephrine, and saline solution) into the area of concern to numb the area and help minimize bleeding, bruising, and overall discomfort. The tumescent solution swells the fatty tissues, making removal easier.

Through a puncture wound, Dr. Rothaus will insert a cannula through the skin to remove the fat cells. Dr. Rothaus uses a very small cannula so that it can be placed through the puncture wound. In fact, it is so small that it usually will not even require a suture at the end of the procedure.

Controlled removal of fat and fluid is accomplished in a manner to produce an improved contour. During the procedure, a customized combination of devices are used to create the desired and optimized results. These include two different lasers (SlimLipo™) and (SmartLipo™), a radiofrequency device (ThermiTight®), and a powered cannula (PAL–power-assisted liposuction). Medical suction is used to remove the fat cells through the cannula.

The liposuction procedure is generally done as an outpatient, and most often can be performed using just the tumescent anesthesia mentioned above without the need for intravenous sedation or deeper anesthesia. The advantage of the tumescent anesthesia without the need for sedation is that you can generally leave the office very shortly after your procedure is complete.

What is Liposuction Recovery Like?

The results of liposuction can usually be seen a few weeks after surgery as there will be swelling that will need time to go down. Bruising will also be present. Compression garments will be required to control the swelling and to help the overlying tissues adapt to the new contour. During the recovery process, you are able to return to normal activities very quickly. Patients can return to light activities almost immediately and can expect a full recovery within 10 to 14 days. The scars from the small puncture wounds where the cannula was inserted are usually imperceptible.

Although the results from liposuction are permanent, lifestyle choices can still contribute to weight gain and negate the results of the procedure. It is recommended that you follow a diet and exercise regimen that helps you maintain the results of liposuction.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The cost of liposuction surgery is impacted by the number of areas being treated and the size of these regions. Other factors that determine the price of this fat removal procedure include the amount of fat being removed, the exact techniques used, and the total time needed to perform the surgery.
