Rhinoplasty in NYC

Conveniently serving NYC and Westchester

The nose is one of the most prominent features on the human face and is very critical to how we view our self-esteem and ourselves. It is important to our overall appearance that our nose is well shaped, functions properly, and fits within the natural contours of our face. For those unhappy with the shape, size or proportion of their nose, rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose surgery) may offer the improvement they seek. Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Rothaus, performs rhinoplasty surgery, creating natural, soft results for those living in NYC, Upper East Side, Manhattan, Westchester, and the nearby areas of New York.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to change your nose angle, reshape the tip, narrow the nostrils, or change the size or width of the nasal bridge. Dr. Rothaus will work carefully with you to pick a technique that will best suit you and your aesthetic needs.

Whether you are correcting your nose due to an accident, injury, or you simply desire a nose more proportionate to your face, Dr. Rothaus will provide you with important information and guidance.

A rhinoplasty may improve your appearance or correct a functional problem (such as difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum). The septum is the wall between the two nostrils. Composed of cartilage and bone, it divides the nasal cavity into halves. The ideal nasal septum is straight, separating the left and right sides of the nose into passageways of equal size. In contrast, a deviated septum occurs when the septum is severely shifted away from the midline. In severe cases, a deviated septum may cause difficulty breathing through the nose.

Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a nose job, can benefit individuals of most ages. Children and teens, however, should refrain from receiving rhinoplasty until their facial growth is complete, which is around age 18 for boys and age 16 for girls. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals in good health with:

  • A disproportionately large nose for the face
  • A depression or hump on the bridge of the nose
  • An uncommonly wide shape to the nose
  • A drooping nasal tip
  • A nasal tip that is enlarged
  • Nostrils that are excessively large
  • A crooked or asymmetrical nose caused be injury or birth
  • Impaired Breathing

What Are Your Options for Rhinoplasty Surgery?

There are two common approaches to perform a rhinoplasty: the closed technique and the open technique. The closed technique is much less invasive, does not leave external scars, and, in our opinion, has a shorter recovery because there is less swelling due to the absence of incisions on the nose. The closed technique will be used preferentially at Rothaus Plastic Surgery unless there is a need to alter the shape of the nostrils.

Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

During your nasal surgery consultation, Dr. Rothaus will perform an examination of your nose and face. This information will help to avoid surgical complications.

Dr. Rothaus will walk you through the details of the procedure, including preparation, the surgical process, and recovery/healing. You will be able to ask questions and voice any concerns you may have. He will create a surgical plan, and a date will be set for your rhinoplasty surgery.

How Does the Rhinoplasty Procedure Work?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in an accredited surgical facility while under sedation and local anesthesia. General anesthesia is not required. The procedure generally takes less than an hour.

At the start of the procedure, the chosen incisions are created. Bone, cartilage, and/or soft tissue are altered to achieve the desired results. In some cases, grafts may be inserted to bolster the strength of the nasal architecture. Grafts are shaped pieces of autologous cartilage or bone. Typically, they are made of cartilage from the patient’s rib, ear, or nasal septum. Once the procedure is complete, incisions are closed using sutures.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Time off from work is required after rhinoplasty in order to rest and recover. There may be some bruising, which is visible for up to five to seven days. The majority (but not all) of the swelling after a rhinoplasty is gone after several weeks; however, it may take many months until the residual swelling resolves and the absolute final result is seen.

An insertion of gauze or cotton, also known as nasal packing, may be used to control bleeding after surgery. A nose splint will be required for a couple days until it is time to reveal the newly shaped nose. The nose will regain its sensation, final contour and softness after three to six months.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Surgery Cost?

The cost of a rhinoplasty procedure depends on the exact details of each patient’s unique case. The price of your nose job will vary based on the techniques utilized, the type of anesthesia administered, and the total time needed to perform the surgery. If your procedure is functional in nature, its cost will most likely be covered by your health insurance provider.
