Overview

The nose is one of the most prominent features on the human face and very critical to how we view our self-esteem and ourselves. It is important to our overall appearance that our nose is well shaped, functions properly, and fits within the natural contours of our face. For those unhappy with the shape, size or proportion of their nose, rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose surgery) may offer the improvement they seek. Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Rothaus, performs rhinoplasty surgery and creates natural, soft results. There are many variations to the rhinoplasty procedure and Dr. Rothaus will work carefully with you to pick a technique that will best suit you and your aesthetic needs. Alterations can be made to change your nose angle, reshape the tip, narrow the nostrils or change the size or width of the nasal bridge. Whether you are correcting your nose due to an accident, injury, or you simply desire a nose more proportionate to your face, Dr. Rothaus will provide you with important information and guidance.

Best Candidates

Rhinoplasty, or nose job, offers benefits to individuals of most any age. However, children and teens should wait until their facial growth is complete. For girls, this typically occurs around age 16, and for boys at age 18. Good candidates for a rhinoplasty include healthy individuals with any of the following issues:

  • A nose that is disproportionately large for the face
  • A hump or depression on the nasal bridge
  • A wide shape nose
  • A nasal tip that droops
  • An enlarged nasal tip
  • Excessively flared nostrils
  • An off-center or crooked nose
  • A nose that is asymmetrical caused by injury or birth
  • A nose that impairs breathing

Surgical Technique

There are a couple of different ways to perform nose surgery, that being the closed technique and the open technique. The closed technique is much less invasive, does not leave external scars and, in our opinion, has a shorter recovery because there is less swelling due to the absence of incisions on the nose. The closed technique will be used preferentially at Rothaus Plastic Surgery unless there is a need to alter the shape of the nostrils.

During/After Surgery

Rhinoplasty is considered an outpatient procedure. It is performed in an accredited surgical facility under sedation and local anesthesia. General anesthesia is not required. The procedure generally takes less than an hours and there may be some swelling and bruising for up to 5-7 days. Nasal packing, which is the insertion of gauze or cotton into the nasal chamber to control bleeding may be used. After surgery, patients will wear a nose splint for a couple of days. Once this splint is removed, the newly shaped nose will be revealed. It can take a few months for the nose to gain its sensation, as well as its final contour and softness.

Get A Softer, Gorgeous Nose!

Noses that are too large or too wide, or have a specific deformity may only be able to be enhanced through nose surgery. Rhinoplasty can make a nose look smaller, more defined, softer in appearance, and natural looking as it pertains to the rest of the face. Countless patients have had rhinoplasty surgery at our office and love their results. We invite you to call our plastic surgery center today to learn more about this popular cosmetic procedure.
