Dr. Kenneth Rothaus offers men and women the opportunity to have flatter, more toned abdomens with tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty. One of the most popular plastic surgeries in the history of cosmetic medicine, tummy tucks can provide effective results that last.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

At our offices in Westchester and NYC, tummy tuck is a common procedure. This popular treatment, especially among weight loss patients and new moms, works by removing pockets of extra fat around the abdominal area, as well as tightening the underlying tissues for a firmer look. In some cases, a tummy tuck will improve the appearance of a C-section scar, as well as surgically remove visible stretch marks. New York plastic surgeon, Dr. Rothaus, has years of experience in delivering outstanding results that can last years. Abdominoplasty continues to offer a terrific aesthetic solution, allowing patients to feel comfortable in their own skin and pleased with their new appearance.

Who is a Good Candidate for Abdominoplasty?

Patients considering a tummy tuck surgery should be at or near their goal weight. Our doctor believes that this surgery garners the most effective results once all pregnancies have been completed and additional weight gain can be avoided. In general, good candidates for tummy tucks are men or women who demonstrate:

  • Excess or sagging skin of the abdomen
  • Abdominal contour that protrudes and is out of proportion to the rest of the body
  • Stable weight if excessive skin is due to massive weight loss
  • Weakened and separated abdominal muscles (due to pregnancy)
  • Excess fatty tissue that is located primarily in the abdomen

What is the Tummy Tuck Procedure Like?

During the initial consultation, our dedicated team will evaluate the overall health of the skin and assess skin quality, looseness, and the amount of fat that is present in the abdominal region. This will help our surgeon to develop an individual surgical plan. Some patients will only require minor tightening, known as a mini tummy tuck or mini-abdominoplasty. Ohers will require a more extensive approach, which is a full tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. The difference is in the size of the incision, the extent of dissection, time in the operating room and the amount of skin and fat need to be removed.

Different abdominoplasty surgeries have different lengths and locations of incision. During a complete tummy tuck surgery, a horizontal incision is placed just within or above the pubic area. The incision extends laterally toward the hipbones and the length depends largely on the amount of skin to be removed. In a mini abdominoplasty, a shorter incision is used and the belly button is not moved during the procedure.

How is the Recovery from Abdominoplasty?

After the tummy tuck procedure, which can take between two to three hours to complete, the patient can return home the same day. Since general anesthesia is administered, patients are advised to bring a friend or family member who can assist them with getting home. In some cases, patients may have to spend a night at the hospital to have their vitals monitored.

After tummy tuck surgery, patients will need to be very careful as they attempt to stand straight and begin moving around. For the first few days, standing up straight can feel painful. This pain should subside within a few days.

Swelling and bruising are expected, but the use of an abdominal compression garment will help with this. This compression garment, known as an abdominal binder, is usually worn for around six weeks. Through this period, it speeds up the healing process and keeps the covered area safe.

The abdominal binder is also responsible for preventing fluid buildup in the area. A drainage tube may also be attached to the abdominal area as a way to drain excess blood and fluids.

How long it takes for a patient’s body to recover depends on the intensity of their surgery. There will be some numbness over portions of the abdominal area, and this may persist for several months. Patients may return to light activities within two weeks from surgery and can expect a full recovery within six to eight weeks.

After all swelling goes down, full results can be seen. The outcome following this surgery is a tighter, flatter tummy. Scarring is typically not seen as the incision is placed inconspicuously and is generally hidden by undergarments and bathing suit bottoms. If the patient had undergone a C-section surgery before, then the new scar can be placed alongside it to prevent new scar locations.

What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is a modified version of the typical abdominoplasty procedure that addresses only the lower abdomen below the belly button. Good candidates for a mini tummy tuck typically have excess fat and skin, causing a lower belly “pooch.” Many people who have lost significant amounts of weight but are left with excess skin and fat in localized spots may benefit from this surgery. As implied in the title of mini tummy tuck, the procedure is less invasive than a full tummy tuck, requiring only small incisions (usually two to three inches long) in the lower abdomen. The recovery process for this surgery is also shorter, though patients should expect to be out of work for two weeks afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do tummy tucks work?

Absolutely! Tummy tucks work particularly well at removing excess skin and fat and tightening and strengthening separated abdominal muscles.

How do I prepare for a tummy tuck?

To prepare for a tummy tuck, you’ll want to quit smoking if you’re a smoker, avoid taking blood thinner medication, and make sure to get any medical evaluation or blood testing your doctor requires.

How long will a tummy tuck last?

A tummy tuck is permanent, but sticking to a healthy diet and exercise routine ensures you can maintain the results.

Can you get a tummy tuck if youre obese?

It is possible to get a tummy tuck if you’re obese, but it’s important to consult your doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Generally, it’s recommended for patients to have a BMI of 32 or lower.

Do you get a scar from a tummy tuck?

Yes, but your surgeon will place the incision in an inconspicuous place, so the scar is not visible. If you properly care for the incision, scarring should be minimal.
