A woman’s body inevitably changes dramatically after a pregnancy; this is no surprise to mothers, as they watch the changes occur during the process of creating a new life.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
Many women experience significant changes in the appearance of their body as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, there are mommy makeover cosmetic procedures that can help make moms feel confident. A mommy makeover is not a single procedure, but refers to a group of procedures, all or some of which are combined, to help reverse some of the changes in the shape and appearance of a woman’s body after pregnancy.
Not every woman needs every procedure that may be included in the Mommy Makeover and the surgery may include only one or all of the procedures. The treatment plan is customized after an in-depth consultation with our board certified plastic surgeon. The procedures most commonly included in the Mommy Makeover include
Abdomen
The goal of the tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is to remove excess skin, remove excess fat and, if necessary repair the underlying rectus abdominis muscle. The latter defect is often referred to as a diastasis recti. This may involve the use of liposuction with or without a laser. In smaller tummy tucks the umbilicus (belly button) can be left in place. In larger procedures the location of the belly button does have to be repositioned.
Breasts
Often, after pregnancy and breast-feeding patients are unhappy with the appearance of their breast due to loss of volume and ptosis or drooping of the breast. Volume can be replaced with a breast augmentation which is the placement of an implant to restore volume. The implants, that can be either silicone or saline, are placed either above or below the muscle. If a woman has ptosis, she might require a mastopexy or breast lift. The mastopexy involves relocating the nipple and areolar (they are left attached to the underlying breast tissue) and reshaping the skin of the breast. This can be done with or without an implant., Finally, woman with very large breasts, can have a breast reduction to reduce the volume and reshape the breast.
Body
Liposuction is the classic body contouring procedure to reshape the body to remove stubborn fat deposits from various areas of the body. These areas include the hips, thighs, back, love handles, bra line, and axillary folds (those areas in front and in back of the arm pit area.
The type of anesthesia required varies depending on the procedures being performed. Liposuction and small tummy tucks and abdominoplasties can often be done under a local anesthesia (sometimes supplemented with an oral sedative or ProNox (a weaker version of “laughing gas”). Larger procedures will require an anesthesiologist and sedation or even a general anesthesia.
